Chinese employees return to their accommodation area after work at the site of the Tuz Lake underground natural gas storage expansion project in Aksaray Province, Türkiye, Feb. 11, 2025. The Tuz Lake underground natural gas storage expansion project is located on the Anatolian Plateau in Aksaray Province, a central province in Türkiye, with cold and snowy winters and hot and dry summers. Chinese constructors have been working here for many years, building the natural gas storage expansion project in an effort to boost Türkiye's green and low-carbon transformation.
The core part of the expansion project, which includes design, procurement and construction of ground station facilities, is undertaken by China CAMC Engineering Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China National Machinery Industry Corporation.
The core part of the expansion project has achieved mechanical completion recently and is preparing for trial operation. After the project is completed, it will greatly improve Türkiye's natural gas transportation and storage capacity, ease local energy shortages, and provide a guarantee for Turkish clean energy supply.
As a supporter of the BRI, Türkiye signed a memorandum of understanding with China in 2015 to align with its Middle Corridor plan, connecting Türkiye and Europe to China via a Trans-Caspian transport route.
Over the years, cooperation between China and Türkiye in hydropower, photovoltaics, wind power and other fields has been continuously strengthened. The Tuz Lake underground natural gas storage expansion project jointly built by China and Türkiye is expected to achieve a win-win outcome for local economic development and environmental protection.
